Product Description

With its generous 22-quart capacity, this Oster countertop roaster oven functions as an alternative to turning on the full-size conventional oven. Use it for anything from roasting a turkey (up to 22 pounds), baking a birthday cake, cooking a vegetarian stew, or serving up a casserole. The versatile appliance can also be used as a second oven when needing more cooking space in the kitchen to accommodate all the items on the holiday menu, plus it offers portable convenience when transporting a side dish across town. The 22-quart roaster oven also provides a removable steel roasting rack, stay-cool side handles, and a convenient lid holder. To use, simply add food to the removable enamel-on-steel roasting pan, adjust the temperatures between 150 and 450 degrees F, and it takes care of the rest.

1Essentially a DISPOSABLE Roaster Oven....
By pellfam
I am surprised at the number of positive reviews this product has recieved so far, but I think sometimes folks write a review before the test of time. I have used this roaster several times and intially I liked it. However, after not too many uses the surface of the cookwell started to chip and once that happened the flaking off of the enamel progressed rapidly - which makes the roaster unusable for cooking stews or roasting meats directly in the cookwell. The quality of the coating of the cookwell is totally substandard and I would think an embarassment to the Oster company. A replacement cookwell is not available for this product and I am still waiting to hear back from Oster. I am not the only purchaser of this roaster who has experienced this problem, so I am not unique in this.

My recommendation - if you only see yourself using this roaster on a few occasions, then perhaps the low price justifies buying a product that has such a limited useful life. However if you want to actually get some use out of a roaster oven and have it for many years, then I would suggest the NESCO 18 qt Roaster with a STAINLESS STEEL cookwell. Twice the price (with shipping) of the Oster oven, but many times the useful life. I have one now and find it to be well worth the extra money. Be sure to carefully read the description for the Nesco - it does offer cheaper models with an enamel cookwell - you want the stainless steel cookwell. Many models will state stainless steel in the title but it's referring to the outer body. Look in the item specs for what the liner or cookwell is made of.

4Trial Runs Recommended.

Oster CKSTRS23 22-Quart Roaster Oven, Stainless Steel
This oven works pretty much as expected, though the cooking directions leave something to be desired. For example, the booklet said to cook a 12-pound turkey at 375 for 3.5 hours. It was done an hour early, and bordering on being overdone at that. Everyone should become familiar with his or her own oven's cooking times. That 12-pound bird would have been better at 350 for 2.45 hours, or 375 for 2 hours. Make sure you have a test run or two before you rely on it for something like a major holiday, and write corrections in its cookbook to help you or others remember the temperatures and times you really need. Once you do that, I don't foresee any major problems.

The metal cased unit also gets quite hot and you or little kids can be burned if proper care isn't exercised. A magnetic rip-away cord would have been nice for safety, but you can also accidentally unplug those and not notice for hours, so even those aren't perfect. So, with it's normal plug, set it someplace out of major traffic ways and make sure the cord is not going to be tripped over.

Despite what I've read in other oven reviews, the turkey's skin was crispy - no problem - I just rubbed it with oil and sprinkled it with seasoning. It's a large oven and it holds a 22-pound turkey without a problem. The clean up of the removable large crock-pot like inner shell isn't too hard, but like any oven, you might wish to occasionally use an oven cleaner and soak it when elbow grease isn't enough. I don't have the three-compartment serving tray, but I suspect this would make an excellent chaffing dish for parties (that lower temperature wouldn't burn people - just keep the cord out of the way).
Finally, using this instead of your conventional oven would keep the house cooler in the summer, and since it's portable, you can easily use it out on the patio or deck.

All in all, I'd recommen d this oven.

Oster CKSTRS23 22-Quart Roaster Oven, Stainless Steel

Absolutely love this oven.. As I listed, this is my very first experience using one of these type ovens.. I cooked a 23 pound turkey in this oven for Thanksgiving with NO problems!!! Things dont take as long to cook in this product than it would in your regular oven.. This roasting oven is such a blessing to me... So get yourself one and have a ball cooking with it..!!!
