3A problem with an otherwise decent product
By Foodie
We are on our third Food Saver. When purchased they work great, but over time they seem to stop sealing, either bag or cannister. We wish we knew then what we know now. To start, DON'T throw out one of these things. Unless we've missed it, they don't tell you that the rubbery gaskets in a lot of these models and this model in particular WEAR OUR. When they do the unit tries to seal but never "gets all the way". Turns out you can buy new gaskets from the FoodSaver site (though it seems they could do a better job of a material that doesn't wear out).

We saw advice that you can wash and dry them and they work again. We found that not to help. We DID find that soaking the easily removed gaskets in water and putting them back in and using it right way makes it work like new. The water increases the seal. This is, of course, a pain. But thought people should know.

UPDATE: A recent review from T. Zenner says to try a light coating of vegetable oi l on the gaskets. I found that didn't work for me (maybe mine are just too old). So I just drenched them in vegetable oil instead, pressing some to get them to soak up the oil. That did it. After about 2 weeks it is still working almost like new... Just hope the oil doesn't turn rancid or mold or something nasty. My original water solution works, but is only good until they dry out which is pretty quick.

5Great product
By Ralph Moran
I own a foodsaver and love it. I travel alot and only have so much room in my duffle bag when deploying. I found this product to work as well on vaccuming and sealing clothes as it does on food. I have owned my vaccum sealer for 3years and have deployed with it to Iraq twice. Still going strong. The best thing to deploy with. I also use it at home. I am single and it is hard to buy meals and save when they are family size. This product takes care of that and no waste. The life of my things in the freezer is greatly extended. I don't get paid enough to throw money down the toilet. I highly recommend this product.

4no freezer burn
By J. Psmith
After having to throw away a huge amount of freezer burned fish, which my husband packed in ziploc bags, I will always use my foodsaver from here on in.

I had a Deni brand vac sealer, but didn't care for the light weight sealing film. I also found problems with seals failing with the Deni.

After giving up on the Deni, my husband took to using Ziploc Freezer bags, but because of the size, he put too much in and I would end up defrosting 3 pounds of fish at a time, and wasting half usually because nobody here likes leftovers.

I was given the FoodSaver and lots of extras by a friend. The Film is waffled and extra heavy. I have sealed lots of fish and meat since getting this product and have been very satisfied with the performance. The bags can be made to accomodate any portion, the film can even be washed & reused.

I have not yet tried the canister, but after recently tossing some expensive nuts, I think I will soon!
